Elevation 2001 North America Leg Ends

24 Jun 2001
Kofi Annan and Bill Clinton were among the guests as U2's acclaimed 50-date tour of North America came to a close on Friday in New Jersey.

Jostling with Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, and former President Clinton, were Michael Stipe and MIke Mills of REM, Beastie Boy Adam Yauch and model Christy Turlington.

Highlight of the night was the live debut of another song from All That You Can't Leave Behind when co-producer Danny Lanois took the stage for an acoustic version of Wild Honey. He stayed onstage as the band then performed The Ground Beneath Her Feet.

Kofi Annan was thanked by Bono for his work campaigning for the global fund to fight AIDS in Africa while Drop the Debt campaigners Jamie Drummond and Lucy Matthews were also thanked - in the same breath as Bill Clinton - for their work on debt relief for the poorest countries.

This second New Jersey show was the fiftieth since the band opened the tour in Miami in late March and the touring party are now on a two week break before the European leg of Elevation opens in Scandinavia.
